Apple Teams Up with LG for New Smart Home Devices
Apple's innovative smart home range features a doorbell, lock, and thermostat, developed in collaboration with LG Electronics.
In an exciting move, Apple is set to enter the smart home market with a suite of new devices, thanks to a unique collaboration with LG Electronics. This new lineup aims to enhance Apple's ecosystem, which includes the updated HomePod mini and a new TV set-top box.
Introducing the New Smart Devices
Scheduled for reveal on October 13, Apple's latest devices include a smart doorbell, a deadbolt lock, and a thermostat. These accessories will complement other offerings such as indoor and outdoor security cameras, as well as a floodlight camera. Although the products bear the LG brand, LG is responsible for manufacturing and support, allowing Apple to expand its product range efficiently.
A Unique Collaborative Strategy
This partnership marks a continuation of Apple's approach to work with manufacturers like Belkin and Logitech to create products that carry their branding. This strategy enables Apple to grow its ecosystem while minimizing the costs and challenges associated with developing a broader range of smart home devices on its own.
By collaborating with LG, Apple can influence the design, feature set, and engineering of these products while keeping the majority of the development process private.
Features and Connectivity
Both companies are currently navigating regulatory approvals for these devices, with LG filing specifications and product names with organizations such as the US Federal Communications Commission. Among the registered products are the LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Smart Thermostat, and LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, which will feature support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and new smart home protocols like Thread and Matter.
Notably, the smart lock will incorporate ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, enabling convenient auto-unlocking for users as they approach their door.
A Fresh Start for HomeKit
Apple's new device lineup represents a significant reboot for its HomeKit platform, which was introduced in 2014 but has struggled to gain traction against competitors like Amazon and Google. By integrating these new devices with Siri, Apple hopes to revitalize interest in the smart home category.
Looking ahead, Apple has plans for further innovations, including a privacy-focused home monitoring device and a refreshed smart home hub featuring a screen mounted on a robotic arm.
LG's Smart Home Expansion
This collaboration also signals a major step for LG in the smart home sector. Known primarily for its home appliances and televisions, this is LG's first foray into smart locks, floodlight cameras, and indoor cameras in nearly a decade.
These developments position Apple and LG as potential competitors to established players like Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest, each offering comprehensive smart home solutions that help users monitor their residences effectively.
A Long-Standing Partnership
The relationship between Apple and LG extends beyond just this new product line. Once competitors in the smartphone market, they have since become essential partners, with LG Display providing screens for numerous Apple devices. Additionally, both companies previously collaborated on external monitors when Apple stepped out of that market nearly a decade ago.
This strategic partnership could lead to rewarding benefits for both companies as they venture into the smart home arena, combining Apple's technological prowess with LG's manufacturing capabilities.
