Athenahealth Partners with Anthropic for Patient Health Queries

Patients can now inquire about their medical records using Claude after Athenahealth's new AI integration.

Athenahealth, a prominent healthcare technology provider serving approximately 20% of the US population, has established a partnership with Anthropic. This collaboration allows patients to interact with Claude, an AI model, regarding their health records.

Introduction of AthenaPatient MCP

The newly launched AthenaPatient Model Context Protocol (MCP) is designed to connect patient health records with Claude. This secure server facilitates patients in receiving tailored responses about their health history after they log in with their credentials.

Access and Privacy Features

AthenaPatient MCP is currently available only to subscribers of Claude Pro and Claude Max, priced at $20 and $100 per month, respectively. Notably, access to Claude does not imply that all Athenahealth patients will have their data shared. Patients must actively consent to share specific health information, which they can manage and revoke at any point.

Once credentials are authenticated, Claude can analyze various health data, including lab results, medications, allergies, and visit history, to respond to patient inquiries. However, it is important to emphasize that this tool does not provide medical advice. According to Sam Lambson, Athenahealth's vice president of product management, patients should seek guidance from qualified healthcare professionals for diagnoses or treatment plans.

Clarifying the Tool's Purpose

The AthenaPatient MCP tool is primarily intended to help users comprehend medical information instead of offering direct medical recommendations. For instance, patients might ask Claude about their latest test results but should not expect detailed explanations about the implications of those results.

Industry Trends in Health Tech

This partnership is part of a broader trend of collaborations between technology companies and healthcare providers. For instance, earlier this year, Microsoft joined forces with the Mayo Clinic to innovate AI for healthcare, and Boston Children’s Hospital collaborated with OpenAI for an enterprise AI system aimed at enhancing clinical and administrative tasks.

Recent findings from the Pew Research Center indicate that a significant number of Americans, around 34%, have consulted chatbots for medical advice. This collaboration aims to enhance the security and privacy of these interactions by ensuring that patient account credentials are required for access.

The Value of Health Data

Health data remains a highly valuable asset, attracting considerable interest from tech companies that wish to partner with healthcare providers. The ambition of AI to significantly influence medical outcomes hinges on access to extensive health datasets. However, the primary goal of the Athenahealth and Anthropic partnership seems to revolve around streamlining administrative tasks for healthcare professionals rather than solely focusing on training AI to solve complex medical issues.

Future Implications for Patient Engagement

While it is still uncertain whether this partnership will definitively enhance patient outcomes, surveys indicate a general hesitance among Americans regarding AI's role in clinical settings. A significant number of respondents expressed a desire for human oversight when integrating AI into health care procedures.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in utilizing AI within the healthcare landscape, potentially reducing the administrative burden on physicians and allowing for more efficient patient management.
