Discord Introduces Searchable Public Messages: What You Need to Know

Discord is planning to make messages from large servers public in search engines. Here's how to manage your privacy settings.

New Discoverable Servers Feature

Discord, the popular messaging platform, is rolling out a significant update that allows public messages from large servers to be indexed by search engines. This new feature applies to servers with over 1,000 members, referred to as Discoverable Servers. Users can expect dedicated web pages filled with community information, including server descriptions and summaries of conversations that are public.

Private Chats Remain Secure

It's important to note that private direct messages (DMs) and group chats will continue to remain confidential and will not be discoverable. The changes are focused solely on public interactions within these large servers.

Understanding Server Web Pages

From mid-December 2026, server members' messages sent in public channels will be included in web searches, as stated in Discord's support documentation. Each Discoverable Server will have its own Server Web Page, visible in search engines such as Google and DuckDuckGo. These pages will not only present a succinct description of the server but will also display conversation summaries from public channels, facilitating easier access for prospective members.

How Admins Can Control Visibility

For server administrators wishing to manage what is displayed publicly, the process is straightforward:

  1. Navigate to Server Settings.
  2. Select Web Presence.

Administrators can choose which channels are visible on their community's Server Web Page or decide to opt out entirely, limiting visibility to just a basic server description. If privacy is a priority, even the server description can be disabled.

Options for Regular Users

Regular users also have the opportunity to control their privacy settings. To opt out of having your messages featured:

  1. Go to User Settings.
  2. Select Data and Privacy.

Here, you’ll find options to disable personalized ads, data collection, and an option to prevent your message content from being included on Server Web Pages. Importantly, one toggle will allow users to manage these permissions across all Discoverable Servers they belong to, simplifying the process.

Privacy Concerns and Future Implications

This new feature raises questions about privacy and the potential for unintended exposure. However, Discord assures users that private servers and smaller communities will not be impacted, as only servers that meet specific criteria—being at least 8 weeks old, active, and following Discord's safety standards—will have messages publicly indexed.

As Discord positions itself to compete with platforms like Reddit, this update could transform how information flows in niche communities, enabling users to access useful content that was previously more difficult to find.

Stay informed about these changes, especially if you’re an active member of larger Discord communities. Keeping your privacy intact is achievable with the configured settings available to both users and server administrators.
