Enhance Your Mouse Skills with New PowerToys Features

Microsoft's PowerToys introduces two innovative mouse tools: Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide, making text selection and visibility easier.

Enhance Your Mouse Skills with New PowerToys Features

Microsoft's latest update to its free PowerToys utility for Windows has introduced two exciting features aimed at improving your mouse experience. These tools, Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide, are designed to streamline text selection and enhance visibility while typing.

PowerToys Version 0.102: What’s New?

With the release of PowerToys version 0.102, users can now take advantage of these new mouse helpers. If you haven't already installed or updated PowerToys, you can do so easily via the Microsoft Store or its GitHub page. For current users, simply check for updates through the app.

Effortless Text Selection with Mouse Button Lock

We all know how cumbersome it can be to select large amounts of text. Holding down the mouse button can quickly become a hassle, particularly when the text spans multiple pages. Thankfully, Mouse Button Lock simplifies this process significantly.

To initiate text selection, press and hold your desired mouse button for about 1 to 2 seconds, then release it. You can drag your cursor over the text you want to select, which will automatically highlight as you move. Once you reach the end of the selection, just click the button again to finalize your choice.

Although a similar ClickLock feature exists in Windows settings, PowerToys enhances this with more customization options. Users can select which mouse button to use as a trigger and fine-tune the selection duration down to milliseconds. You can even set a custom distance for how far the selection can extend, making it easier to tailor the functionality to fit your needs.

Stay Focused with CursorHide

Have you ever found the mouse cursor obstructing your view when you're typing? CursorHide addresses this issue by hiding your cursor while you type or after a specified period of inactivity.

To activate this feature, go into the Mouse Utilities section of PowerToys and toggle the setting on. You can choose to hide the cursor only while typing, only after inactivity, or both. If you select inactivity, you can set a delay between 1 to 60 seconds before the cursor vanishes.

Once set up, test the feature in any app by typing – you’ll notice your cursor disappears automatically. If you require it again, simply move the mouse. Furthermore, you can set a delay for cursor visibility, allowing for a distraction-free typing experience.

Explore More PowerToys Utilities

Those interested in maximizing their mouse functionality can try out additional PowerToys features such as Find My Mouse, which helps locate the cursor when it goes missing, and Mouse Highlighter, which visually emphasizes areas clicked on the screen.

PowerToys is a fantastic resource, boasting over 30 unique tools catering to various user needs. Don’t hesitate to explore and find the utilities that best suit your workflow, as they can be activated and deactivated with ease for optimal customization.
