Ethiopia Launches First AI-Enhanced Mobile Network with ZTE
Ethio Telecom partners with ZTE to launch the first AI-based mobile network in Ethiopia, boosting connectivity and efficiency.
In a significant milestone for Ethiopia’s telecommunications sector, Ethio Telecom has joined forces with ZTE Corporation, a leading Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer, to roll out the country’s first pre-commercial Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network (AIR RAN). This groundbreaking technology aims to enhance mobile network capacity and data transmission speeds amid surging demand for connectivity.
Enhancements in Network Performance
The deployment of this advanced network solution, which took place on November 4, 2026, has provided notable improvements for users. Reports indicate that the 4G network capacity has increased by an impressive 11%. Moreover, peak-hour user throughput has surged by 40% when compared to traditional network solutions, as stated by Ethio Telecom and ZTE.
How AI is Transforming Connectivity
The integration of artificial intelligence into radio access networks represents a pivotal step in telecommunications innovation. This technology optimizes how network resources are allocated, particularly during peak usage times, when a vast number of subscribers are accessing mobile data services simultaneously.
The system employs ZTE’s AIREngine intelligent computing engine, which leverages AI-driven intelligent beam scheduling alongside Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) technology. This allows the network to dynamically adjust resource allocation in response to varying traffic patterns, enhancing overall efficiency and service quality without the need for extensive new infrastructure.
Responding to Growing Demand
Ethio Telecom and ZTE have dedicated the past two years to developing AI-enabled network innovations that enhance the performance of Ethiopia’s existing 4G capabilities. With over 90 million subscribers on its network, Ethio Telecom is addressing increasing demand for mobile internet, digital financial services, and various connectivity-dependent applications.
Urban centers, in particular, face challenges related to peak-hour network congestion, as thousands of users vie for access to limited resources. The deployment of AI technology aims to alleviate some of these pressures and improve the user experience during critical times.
A Vision for the Future
This deployment aligns with Ethio Telecom’s overarching goal of evolving from a standard telecommunications provider to an AI-driven digital enterprise. The company has articulated this vision through its “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which emphasizes expanding digital services, modernizing network infrastructure, and reinforcing its role in Ethiopia’s rapidly advancing digital landscape.
By embracing such innovations, Ethio Telecom is positioning itself to meet the rising needs of consumers and businesses alike, ensuring that Ethiopia remains connected in an increasingly digital world.
