Homeowners Prioritize Integration and Security in Smart Technology
Vivint's latest How We Home report highlights a shift towards integrated smart home solutions focused on security and energy management.
Smart Home Preferences Evolve
Recent insights from Vivint's How We Home report reveal a noticeable shift in homeowners' expectations regarding smart home technology. Many individuals are now prioritizing security, efficient energy management, and the convenience of managing multiple connected devices from a single platform.
According to the findings, 37% of homeowners utilize smart technology to track and lower their energy usage by using devices like smart thermostats and energy monitors. Additionally, 31% of respondents highlighted energy management as a primary motivator for adopting smart home solutions.
"This year's report shows an increasing demand for integrated smart home systems that simplify life rather than complicate it," says David Porter, Managing Director of Vivint.
Porter emphasizes that Vivint aims to provide customers with an integrated solution that enhances safety, efficiency, and overall peace of mind.
Growing Importance of Professional Installation
As more homeowners incorporate smart devices into their residences, there is a notable preference for professional installation over DIY setups. While many once viewed DIY as a cost-effective choice, data indicates a shift in mindset. Approximately 34% of homeowners prefer professional installation to ensure devices are correctly set up.
Challenges with self-installation are evident: nearly half of the homeowners with smart devices admit to rarely using at least one of them, and 22% purchased devices that remain uninstalled.
With the increasing complexity of smart home systems, professional installation has become paramount. More than 20% of surveyed homeowners revealed that the main advantage of integrated devices lies in the ability to control multiple gadgets through one app or platform. This integration is seen as crucial for effective energy management and security.
Life Changes Drive Smart Home Adoption
Besides energy saving and security, various personal circumstances also influence the growing adoption of smart home technology. Notably, 42% of homeowners are currently providing care for a family member or anticipate doing so in the next five years. This demographic increasingly values the ability to monitor loved ones' wellbeing and receive instant alerts during emergencies or falls.
The elderly care segment is a significant driver of smart home technology utilization, trailing only security and energy efficiency in importance. Among caregivers, 45% express the greatest concern about providing assistance during emergencies.
Travel habits also affect smart home preferences. About 30% of homeowners are inclined to invest in smart devices that offer protection for their homes and belongings while traveling, while 20% cite remote monitoring as a key reason for enhancing their home security.
Takeaways for Future Smart Home Owners
Homeowners' expectations and requirements regarding smart technology are rapidly evolving, influenced by economic factors and personal life changes. Here are some key areas to consider:
- Energy Management: Smart home systems offer more than convenience; they can lead to significant savings and sustainable operation. Homeowners are inclined to choose systems that enhance energy management to combat rising costs.
- Professional Installation: While DIY projects may seem appealing, they often lead to errors and incomplete setups. Opting for professional installation from the beginning ensures optimal device performance, especially in light of safety concerns.
- Adapting Technology to Your Lifestyle: With life’s rapid changes, AI-powered technology can help during major transitions such as caregiving or increased travel. Select a comprehensive system that meets current needs while accommodating future demands.
