Revolutionizing IT: The Role of Agentic AI in Modernization

Discover how agentic AI can overcome the challenges faced by legacy IT modernization efforts.

Revolutionizing IT: The Role of Agentic AI in Modernization

In the world of technology, the need for IT modernization remains a high priority for organizations. As the digital landscape evolves, outdated legacy systems often hinder progress, leading many Chief Information Officers (CIOs) on an ongoing quest for effective solutions.

The Long Road to Modernization

For decades, IT departments have been working on upgrading their infrastructures, transitioning from traditional mainframes to more contemporary systems hosted in the cloud or on-premises. Efforts to modernize have included various strategies like cloud computing, virtualization, and the adoption of microservices. However, according to a recent report by Kyndryl, these modernization initiatives have not always produced the expected outcomes.

Findings indicate that while many organizations have ventured into modernization, just 50% of IT leaders report improvements in operations, and nearly 18% express dissatisfaction with the value derived from these efforts. Additionally, almost half are facing delays and cost overruns, signaling that traditional modernization tactics may be due for a shift.

Introducing Agentic AI

This is where agentic AI comes into play, promising to reshape the IT modernization landscape. Instead of merely replacing outdated systems, agentic AI aims to enhance existing infrastructures, making them more capable and efficient.

By providing organizations with the tools to effectively map the hidden dependencies between older and newer systems, agentic AI addresses a critical gap in modernization efforts. The Kyndryl report highlights that fewer than 10% of organizations feel confident in understanding these interconnections, creating a blind spot that can derail modernization projects.

Automation and Efficiency

The potential benefits of adopting agentic AI include automation of time-consuming tasks like code generation and documentation. Automating these processes reduces the likelihood of human error while accelerating modernization timelines. As organizations increasingly integrate AI into their operations, the motivations for modernization are evolving as well.

Instead of solely aiming to cut costs, businesses now look to enhance overall efficiency and expand their IT capabilities. Kyndryl notes that leaders are more inclined to modernize when they can see clear enhancements to their technology performance.

Challenges Still Loom

Despite the promise of agentic AI, significant challenges remain. Kyndryl's research shows that even today, approximately 40% of enterprises still rely on mainframe systems, complicating the modernization journey. Andy Thurai, a Field CTO founder and former IBM strategist, notes that many organizations have fallen into a continuous cycle of technology purchases, failing to phase out older systems, which leads to a growing technical debt that hampers upgrades.

Moreover, as the market floods with AI-driven solutions, vendors often present AI as a universal fix for all IT issues. However, Thurai warns that this narrative could lead to unpredictable costs. About 30% of IT leaders worry that reliance on AI may result in unexpected increases in computing expenses, illustrating the need for careful consideration when pursuing modernization.

Looking Forward

The quest for an effective IT system continues, with agentic AI indicating a new path forward. While it has the potential to transform modernization efforts, organizations must remain vigilant and adaptable. The advanced architectures being developed today might themselves become the legacy systems of tomorrow.

CIOs and IT leaders must keep striving for improvements in visibility, operational efficiency, and the integration of innovative tools like agentic AI to ensure sustainable modernization efforts. By doing so, they can better navigate the complex landscape of technology and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
