Windows 11 Introduces Built-in Internet Speed Test Feature
Microsoft enhances Windows 11 with an integrated internet speed test tool for easier connectivity checks.
Microsoft is stepping up its game with a practical new feature for Windows 11: a built-in internet speed test tool. This addition aims to streamline how users assess their internet performance, making it more convenient than ever to check if the connection speed aligns with expectations set by internet service providers.
What’s New in Windows 11
The latest Insider build for Windows 11 now includes this integrated speed test tool, which simplifies the process of testing internet speed. Previously, users had to navigate to a separate website or employ an external app to conduct these tests. With this new feature, checking your internet speed is just a few clicks away.
Getting Started with the Speed Test Tool
To access this new internet speed testing feature, you will need to join the Windows Insider Program. Make sure to select the Experimental channel when participating. Given that these builds can exhibit instability, it’s recommended to use a secondary device, such as a spare computer, a dual-boot setup, or a virtual machine.
Once you’re set up in the Insider Program, some additional steps are required to activate the speed test tool:
- Navigate to the Settings menu.
- Click on Windows Update.
- Select Windows Insider Program.
- Click on Feature Flags.
- Find the Quick Settings Speed Test option and enable it.
After making these adjustments, restart your computer to finalize the setup.
Using the Speed Test
When you log back in, accessing the speed test tool is straightforward. You can either:
- Left-click the System tray and select Speed Test from the Quick Settings menu.
- Right-click the Network icon to choose Test Internet Speed from the pop-up options.
Once the interface launches, simply click the Test button to begin the speed assessment. The results will display both download and upload speeds in real-time, offering a clear depiction of your internet performance.
The Evolution of Speed Testing
While Windows 11 previously featured an internet speed test option, users were redirected to a Bing search page instead of obtaining results directly within the operating system. The new integrated tool marks a significant improvement, providing users with a seamless experience without leaving their current workflow.
In a statement from Microsoft, they emphasized that users can gauge their internet performance against their active connection, thus facilitating a quick understanding without unnecessary interruptions. It also clarifies that this updated testing experience builds upon the prior speed test introduced for Windows Insiders.
Underlying Technology
Although Microsoft has not disclosed the specific source behind the speed test, the info icon within the tool indicates it is “Powered by SpeedTest,” suggesting collaboration with the well-known speed testing service Ookla. Testing both the integrated tool and Ookla’s website yielded similar results, reinforcing the accuracy of the new feature.
Looking Forward
Currently, the speed test feature is only accessible via the Insider Experimental channel. While its general release to all Windows 11 users is still pending, the tool shows promise with its user-friendly design and reliable performance. Users are hopeful that it won’t be long before this valuable feature becomes widely available.
