Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct Recap: Ocarina Remake Dated, Switch 2 Edition Revealed
Nintendo's 8 September presentation turned a birthday into a two-year roadmap, from a November remake and October hardware to a 2027 film, amiibo, LEGO and a world concert tour.
Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on 8 September confirmed a full remake of Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November. Around it, the company announced a special-edition console, a live-action film date and a two-year run of merchandise, music and museum events. It was less a games showcase than a plan for keeping Zelda in the spotlight until 2028.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma introduced the remake himself. He described the 1998 classic as "reborn for a whole new era", which is exactly the message Nintendo wanted fans to take away.
The Headline: Ocarina of Time Returns

The Direct also revealed a set of anniversary hardware arriving a week before the game:
- Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition: out on 29 October, with Triforce design details.
- 40th Anniversary Pro Controller: also on 29 October, available with or without a display stand. The stand version is exclusive to Nintendo's New York and San Francisco stores and the online Nintendo Store.
- Anniversary carrying case: with a screen protector, on the same date.
- Two ocarinas: a traditional playable ocarina, and an electric version from HORI that plays notes and whole songs at the press of a button, both due later in 2026.
Beyond the Game
Much of the presentation looked well past this Christmas:
- Live-action film: The Legend of Zelda reaches cinemas worldwide on 30 April 2027, produced by Nintendo, Arad Productions and Sony Pictures.
- amiibo: Young Link and Young Zelda figures arrive in 2027 and unlock retro-styled masks in the remake. A Mineru's Construct amiibo for Tears of the Kingdom lands on 17 September.
- LEGO: a 1,750-piece Ocarina of Time Link and Epona display model for adults, due in spring 2027.
- Hasbro: an electronic Master Sword with sound effects, also in spring 2027.
- Concerts: a 40th anniversary concert series opens in Tokyo in January 2027, then moves to Chicago in February, London in April and Melbourne in May.
- Nintendo Museum: the Kyoto museum is running anniversary ticket designs from 9 September, with more to follow around the game's launch.
