Two things make this keynote unusual, and neither of them is a phone.

A New CEO, On Stage for the First Time

John Ternus took over as Apple CEO on 1 September. This is his first September keynote in the job — the single most-watched hour in the company's calendar, eight days into the role.

September keynotes are heavily rehearsed and rarely reveal much about the person running them. But tone is worth watching: which products get the time, which get a slide, and how much of the presentation is spent on hardware engineering versus services and ecosystem. Ternus arrives from the hardware side, and the balance of the keynote will be the first real signal of where his Apple puts its weight.

The Foldable: iPhone Ultra

The headline product is expected to be Apple's first foldable iPhone, reportedly branded iPhone Ultra. The reported design is book-style rather than clamshell:

• Inner display: roughly 7.8-inch OLED, unfolding into an iPad-like layout.

Apple is arriving late here by several years, which is entirely in character. Multitasking on iPad has been reshaped repeatedly over the last few releases, and a 7.8-inch inner panel is precisely the size where those decisions stop being academic.

Folding hardware is a solved problem. Folding software is not. The demo to watch is not the hinge — it is what happens to an app mid-fold.

iPhone 18 Pro — and the Missing Base Model

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected as iterative updates. Meaningful, not dramatic.

The genuinely odd part: the base iPhone 18 is reportedly delayed to 2027. If that holds, Apple is breaking the annual all-tiers cadence it has run for years, and splitting the lineup onto two different clocks — Pro and foldable in the autumn, standard model later.

For buyers on the standard iPhone, that is a longer wait than usual. For the market, it is a signal that Apple's volume model and its flagship model no longer need to share a release date.

The Rest of the Slate

Reporting points to as many as eight new products across the event and the weeks around it:

• Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 — both strong candidates for stage time.
• Refreshed Macs.
• Updated AirPods.

Not all of these traditionally get keynote minutes; Apple has become comfortable announcing hardware by press release in the days that follow.

Why Developers Should Care About the Date

A hardware launch is also a traffic event for the App Store. New devices mean a surge of submissions, review queues that lengthen, and a compatibility scramble — especially with a new form factor in the mix. If you ship an iOS app, the fortnight after 9 September is not the fortnight to schedule a risky release.

A foldable makes this sharper than a normal year. Layouts that have been safe since the iPhone X get a new configuration to survive, and "it looked fine on every device I own" stops being a testing strategy.

The Bottom Line

Apple's September events are usually predictable by design. This one has three variables that are not: a first-time CEO, a first foldable, and a flagship lineup that has stopped shipping all at once.

Any one of those would make the keynote worth watching. All three land on the same morning.
