Heiman Shows First Matter 1.6 Sensor With Tap-to-Pair NFC Setup at IFA 2026
The IP65 outdoor sensor can be set up with a tap before it is even powered. That could make fitting dozens of smart home devices much quicker for installers.
Chinese sensor maker Heiman has shown what appears to be the first real hardware using Matter 1.6's NFC commissioning, a feature that lets a smart home device join a network with a tap instead of a QR code scan. The demonstration took place at IFA 2026 in Berlin. It centred on a rugged outdoor temperature and humidity sensor, and it was the first sign that one of the most practical changes in the latest Matter release is moving from specification to shipping products.
Setting up Matter devices has improved a lot since the standard launched. However, it still usually means finding a small QR code, often on the back of a device or on packaging that has already been thrown away, and scanning it with a phone. NFC commissioning aims to remove that step.
What Matter 1.6 Changes
The Connectivity Standards Alliance added NFC commissioning in Matter 1.6, released in June. Earlier versions could already use NFC tags to store setup details. Version 1.6 goes further: NFC becomes a transport for commissioning itself.
- Tap to start: an NFC-capable phone or controller is held against the device to begin setup.
- No QR hunting: there is no code to find, photograph or type in.
- Setup before power: commissioning can start before a device is fully powered up.
- Batch provisioning: installers can prepare large numbers of devices before they are fitted.
The last point matters most for professionals. An electrician fitting sensors across a new-build flat, or an installer equipping a hotel floor, could provision every unit on a bench first. Today, each device has to be powered and paired one by one on site.
Matter's biggest barrier has been setup, not connectivity. A tap before the device is even installed is how smart homes scale beyond enthusiasts.
The Hardware Heiman Showed
The NFC demonstration was one part of a broader range of sensors and gateways built around Matter:
- HS2HT outdoor sensor: an IP65-rated temperature and humidity sensor using Matter with NFC pairing. This was the device that showed the new feature.
- WS6GW Matter bridge: connects Zigbee and Sub-GHz devices to Matter platforms, including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Homey.
- SC3 smoke and carbon monoxide alarm: offered in Matter, Zigbee, Wi-Fi and Sub-GHz versions.
- Mains-powered smoke and CO alarm: with battery backup for power cuts.
- HS2VTD door and window sensor: a 4-in-1 device that detects opening, vibration, temperature and humidity.
- HS1ZT dongle: for Zigbee and Thread connectivity.
Heiman has not announced prices or release dates for any of these products.
Why Heiman Matters Here
Heiman is not a well-known consumer brand in Europe, but it is an established maker of sensors and safety devices, many of which are sold under other brands. That is why its early support is significant. When component and sensor suppliers adopt a new Matter feature, retail products can follow quickly without every brand building the capability itself.
The bridge is also important for anyone with an older smart home. Zigbee and Sub-GHz devices remain common, particularly for security and safety. A bridge that exposes them to every major Matter platform helps prevent those devices from becoming obsolete as households move to Matter.

What Happens Next
Two things need to happen before NFC commissioning becomes common. Controllers, mainly phones and smart home hubs, need software support for the new transport. Device makers also need to ship certified hardware. Heiman's demonstration covers the second part. The first depends on how quickly the major platforms add Matter 1.6 features.
The Bottom Line
This was a sensor demonstration, not a product launch, but it is an important early sign for Matter setup. Tap-to-pair commissioning before power-up addresses one of the standard's most persistent problems. If platform support follows, setting up a smart home could become much easier for installers as well as enthusiasts.
