Apple's Surprise and Shine Keynote: Ternus Debuts, Foldable Lands, Prices Climb
John Ternus's first September keynote brought the $1,999 iPhone Duo, pricier Pro models and a launch calendar split across three dates. Here is what happened and what comes next.
Apple's "Surprise and Shine" keynote on 9 September delivered the company's first foldable iPhone, a $100 price rise on its Pro phones and a launch calendar stretched from mid-September to late October. It was also the first September showcase hosted by John Ternus as chief executive, and its focus on new hardware fitted his background.
The pre-event rumours called the foldable "iPhone Ultra". On stage, it arrived as the iPhone Duo. That was the biggest surprise of the day. The rest of the show went largely as expected.
What Apple Put on Stage
The keynote ran from Apple Park and covered five hardware lines plus the autumn software release. In the order that matters for buyers:
- iPhone Duo: Apple's first folding iPhone, starting at $1,999, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen.
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: starting at $1,199 and $1,299, a $100 step up on last year, built around the 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip and a variable-aperture main camera.
- Apple Watch Series 12: from $399, with upgraded health sensing.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: from $799, with longer battery life.
- AirPods 5: from $129, now with active noise cancellation, or $149 with a wireless charging case.
Product-by-product detail belongs in our Mobile coverage. The more useful question for an event recap is what the shape of the keynote tells us.
Three Takeaways From the Keynote
1. The foldable was the headline, but it is not the first to ship
Apple held the iPhone Duo back until after the Pro phones, watches and AirPods, and it is also the last item on the calendar. Everything else arrives weeks earlier. That lets Apple run a normal September sales cycle on familiar product lines while interest in the Duo builds through October.
Apple saved its biggest reveal for the end of the show, and it will reach buyers last as well.
2. Prices moved up
For most buyers, the most important number of the afternoon is the $100 rise on the Pro line. It applies to both the iPhone 18 Pro and the Pro Max. The Duo, at $1,999, also sets a new high starting price for an iPhone.
3. A split calendar is now the norm
The standard iPhone 18 did not appear, and neither did new Macs or iPads. Apple's September event is no longer a single all-at-once refresh. It is the first stage of a longer season of launches.
The Dates That Matter
With the keynote done, Apple's autumn now runs to a clear schedule:
- 12 September: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pre-orders open at 5am Pacific.
- 14 September: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27 and the new macOS (Golden Gate) roll out as free updates.
- 18 September: iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 go on sale.
- 16 October: iPhone Duo pre-orders open.
- 23 October: iPhone Duo reaches buyers.
For developers, the order matters as much as the dates. The software lands four days before the new hardware. Anyone shipping an app has less than a week between the public release of iOS 27 and customers unboxing new phones. There is then a second push before a brand-new folding form factor arrives in late October.
What Ternus Signalled
Ternus came up through Apple's hardware side. It was fitting that his first September keynote centred on a new category of device rather than a software or services story.
Nobody should read too much into one tightly scripted presentation. Still, opening a new chief executive's era with Apple's first foldable is a clear statement that the company still sees new hardware categories as central to its story.
What's Next on the Calendar
The immediate test is pre-order demand for the more expensive Pro models from 12 September. After that, attention turns to October and the Duo launch. No new Macs or iPads were shown on 9 September, so many Apple watchers will also be looking for further announcements before the end of the year.
The Bottom Line
The Surprise and Shine keynote went the way most people expected, with one exception: the foldable arrived as the iPhone Duo, not the rumoured Ultra. It also made clear that Apple's launch season now runs as a sequence rather than a single moment. Prices are up, the foldable is real, and the busiest stretch runs from 12 September to 23 October.
