Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Bets on a Variable-Aperture Camera and a 2nm Chip

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are official, and the change that stands out is one mobile photographers have wanted for years: a main camera with a physically adjustable aperture. Unveiled on 9 September, the pair also move to the 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, adopt Apple's second-generation in-house modem and extend eSIM-only designs to more countries, the UK among them.

Prices start at $1,199 for the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the 6.9-inch Pro Max, both with 256GB of storage. Pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September at 5am Pacific time, and the phones go on sale on Friday 18 September.

The Camera: A Real Iris, Not a Software Trick

The 48-megapixel Fusion main camera now uses six laser-cut blades to move between four aperture settings. Phones have long simulated shallow depth of field in software. A mechanical iris changes how much light actually reaches the sensor and how much of the scene stays in focus, which gives photographers a control they already understand from dedicated cameras.

• Four stops: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0 on the main lens.
• Pro controls: manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance, backed by a live histogram.
• 48MP across the back: all three rear cameras use 48MP sensors, with up to 8x optical-quality zoom.
• Front camera: an 18MP Center Stage sensor for selfies and video calls.
• Video: 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse, plus Cinematic effects that can be added after recording.

Less flashy, but arguably more important, is Apple Reference Image. The feature signs data from the sensor so that an original photo can later be checked for authenticity. With AI-altered pictures now routine on social feeds, building proof of origin into the moment of capture is a meaningful step.

The aperture will sell the phone, but signed photos may matter longer. Proving an image is genuine is becoming as valuable as taking a good one.

Silicon, Modem and Cooling

The A20 Pro pairs a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro. A dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles the processing available for on-device AI. To stop all that from throttling, Apple has fitted a vapour chamber with three times the surface area of the previous design.

• C2 modem: Apple's own cellular chip, which the company says uses 15% less energy than the C1X, with mmWave 5G supported in the US.
• N1 wireless chip: handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
• Dynamic Island: now smaller, and able to show up to three Live Activities at once.

The C2 is the strategic headline for the industry. Each new generation of in-house modem gives Apple more control over one of the most power-hungry parts of a phone, and more say over how its devices behave on carrier networks.

Battery Life and the eSIM Shift

Apple describes the Pro Max as its biggest battery jump yet: up to 45 hours of video playback and around 30 hours of typical use. The smaller Pro reaches up to 36 hours of video playback. Both headline figures apply to eSIM-only models. A compatible wired charger restores 50% in about 15 minutes, and wireless charging reaches 50% in half an hour.

The eSIM-only list is getting longer. Phones sold in the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will have no physical SIM tray. For British buyers, that means moving a number to the new handset through their network's eSIM transfer process rather than swapping a card.

Design, Storage and Materials

• Colours: Black, Silver, Glacier and a new Burgundy.
• Glass: Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, rated for three times better scratch resistance.
• Storage: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and, for the first time on these models, 2TB.
• Materials: 40% recycled content overall, including 85% recycled aluminium in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery.

Both phones cost $100 more at entry level than the models they replace. Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, described the result as "the best Pro iPhone we've ever made".

What Happens Next

3. 18 September: sales begin in more than 65 countries, including the UK, US, India, Germany and Japan.
4. 25 September: availability widens to 20 further countries.

The Bottom Line

This is not a redesign year, but it is a serious camera year. A true variable aperture, 48MP sensors on every rear lens and built-in image signing give the iPhone 18 Pro a clearer identity than recent Pro updates. The trade-offs are a higher starting price and, in more markets, no SIM tray. Buyers who shoot a lot of photos get the most from the upgrade. Everyone else should weigh a $100 rise against what is, outside the camera, a solid but familiar step forward.
