iOS 27 Arrives 14 September, but Siri AI Comes With Daily Limits and No EU Launch

Apple will release iOS 27 as a free update on Monday 14 September. Its headline feature, a rebuilt Siri powered by generative AI, comes with more conditions than any iPhone feature in years. Siri AI needs recent hardware, works only in English at launch, has daily usage limits for its server-based features, and will not be available at first to iPhone users in the European Union.

The update arrives on the same day as iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27 and the new version of macOS. It also comes four days before the iPhone 18 Pro goes on sale.

What Siri AI Is

Apple describes the new assistant as more personal, more capable and more conversational than the Siri most people have used for the past decade. It can understand what is on screen and use personal context from messages, emails and photos to complete requests. Requests are handled on the device where possible, and through Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers when they need more processing power.

• Siri in the Camera: a new mode points the camera at objects for visual search.
• Write with Siri: help with drafting and editing text across apps.
• Photo editing: AI tools including Spatial Reframing and an improved Clean Up.

The Fine Print: Who Gets It, and How Much

This is where iOS 27 differs from a normal software release. Apple's own notes set out several restrictions.

• Hardware: Siri AI needs an Apple Intelligence-capable device. On iPhone, that means the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model or later.
• Language: English only at launch. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish will follow in October.
• Region: Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS.
• Daily limits: features that depend on Apple's server-side models are subject to daily caps. These include Siri AI, the Intelligent Photo Editing tools, Image Playground and the AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts.

Apple has not published numbers for those caps. Its notes say limits may vary by feature, request complexity and system demand, among other factors. In practice, users will not know exactly where the limit is until they reach it.

Usage caps change how people see Siri. It is no longer an unlimited phone feature, but a metered service with a daily allowance.

Why Apple Is Rationing Its AI

Running large AI models in the cloud costs far more than running a traditional voice assistant. Every complex Siri request that goes to Private Cloud Compute uses server capacity Apple has to build and power. Daily limits give Apple a way to control that cost across a very large installed base. They also mean Apple does not have to charge for Siri AI at launch.

The EU restriction reflects a separate pressure. Apple has repeatedly delayed or limited features in Europe while it works through its obligations under the Digital Markets Act. That leaves iPhone owners in Germany, France, Spain and other EU countries paying the same price for new hardware without the most prominent new feature. Apple has not given a date for Siri AI to reach the EU.

What Everyone Else Gets

iOS 27 is not only about Siri. Apple is highlighting a set of improvements that apply more widely:

• Speed: Apple says apps launch up to 30% faster, photos load up to 70% faster and AirDrop transfers run up to 80% faster.
• Child safety: more parental controls.
• Accessibility: automatic captions for video.
• Foldable support: a redesigned interface for the iPhone Duo, including Split View, ahead of its October launch.

Who Is Affected

• Owners of the standard iPhone 15 and older models: they get the speed and accessibility improvements, but not Siri AI.
• EU users: they get iOS 27 but not its main new feature, regardless of which iPhone they own.
• Heavy AI users: they are the most likely to run into the daily limits.
• Developers: apps that use Apple's foundation models through Shortcuts or Private Cloud Compute will need to handle the possibility that a user has reached a limit.

The Bottom Line

iOS 27 delivers the AI Siri that Apple has been promising, with clear limits attached: supported hardware only, English at first, daily caps and no EU launch for now. For eligible users outside Europe, it is the most significant Siri update since the assistant launched. For everyone else, 14 September brings a faster iPhone, but not the main new feature.
