At a glance
Pros
– Auto-washes and dries its mop pad
– More aggressive Dirt Detect sensing
– Faster, improved navigation
– Mop-only mode available
Cons
– Mopping results are only so-so
– Self-emptying dock can leave heavier debris behind
Verdict
The Roomba Combo 10 Max+ brings a welcome AutoWash dock that rinses and dries the mop pad, and it improves navigation and dirt detection. Still, its vacuuming and mopping don’t clearly outperform earlier Roomba combos or some rivals, making the high price harder to justify.

Overview
The Combo line added a retractable mopping module with the J7+, keeping carpets dry during hybrid runs. The Combo 10 Max+ is the first model to pair that system with an AutoWash base that cleans, rinses, and dries the mop pad automatically. That dock simplifies maintenance, but overall cleaning performance—especially mopping—doesn’t leap ahead of prior Roomba combos or some competitors, so the convenience comes with compromises.
Design and features
The robot adopts an all-black finish and measures about 13.3 inches across and 3.4 inches tall, thin enough to reach under most furniture. A front camera with an integrated headlight and a bumper help with navigation and collision sensing. The rear holds a removable combined dustbin and water reservoir.
iRobot has tuned Dirt Detect to trigger more often than on earlier models and added a mop-only cleaning mode in addition to vacuum-only and combined modes. Mapping is quicker—iRobot claims up to seven times faster than the previous generation—and the robot retains room-priority features and obstacle avoidance that performed well in testing. The company also offers a Pet Owners promise: if the robot smears pet waste within the first year, iRobot will replace it.
The AutoWash Dock is also finished in black and keeps a front-opening door for placing items on top. Status lights indicate charging and when to replace the dust bag or refill water. Inside the base are a 3-liter clean-water tank and a 2.5-liter dirty-water tank; the dust bag is rated to last about 60 days under typical use. The dock’s key addition is the wash-and-dry cycle: it rinses and spins the pad with cool water and forces air to dry it, while internal brushes scrub docking components.
Setup
The AutoWash package ships with the robot (mop pad attached), an extra pad, the AutoWash base with tanks and a dust bag, one spare dust bag, a spare filter, a side brush, the base’s ramp and mop-washing brush, drainage pieces, manuals, and the power cord. Installation requires a few extra steps to fit the mop-washing brush and drainage enclosure, but the process is straightforward and guided by the iRobot Home app.
Connecting the robot to Wi‑Fi is typical: power it on, install the app, follow the prompts, enter network credentials, and press the robot’s setup button to complete pairing.
Room mapping and app features
The app guides a mapping run that scans your home without cleaning. If you’ve used other Roombas, previously saved maps can be imported. The app attempts to auto-label rooms and lets you edit names and boundaries, create keep-out and no-mop zones, and set clean zones for extra attention. It also displays photos of obstacles the robot encountered and asks whether they should be treated as temporary or permanent keep-outs.
During mapping the Combo 10 Max+ reliably distinguished hard floors from carpets and avoided wetting rugs. The main app screen shows the map, robot status, battery and liquid levels, and options to start or schedule jobs. You can customize runs by mode, suction level, water flow, number of passes, and enable Smart Scrub for sticky spots. Favorite configurations can be saved, and the robot supports Alexa and Google Assistant voice control.
Performance
In daily use the Combo 10 Max+ generally completed runs without getting stuck, and navigation improved with repeat visits. Obstacle avoidance is solid for small items like bowls and shoes, and it outperformed many rivals at not knocking things over—though it occasionally nudged or ran over soft items such as cloth toys.
Vacuuming was strong on carpet: in pickup tests it recovered roughly 95 percent of a half-cup of rice from an area rug. On hardwood it collected about 75 percent of the same rice test and occasionally scattered pieces. It handled pet hair well, removing fur without leaving tangles.
Mopping performance is functional but not exceptional. Surface dirt was lifted and some shine returned, but sticky stains proved challenging. In a jelly test (a teaspoon of jam), the robot scrubbed for a long time, removed visible residue, but left a sticky sensation. The AutoWash dock rinses and spins the pad efficiently; the pad is dried by forced air but can remain damp for hours after washing. The dock’s self-emptying dustbin quickly handles debris but sometimes fails to clear heavier particles like cat litter.

Should you buy it?
The AutoWash dock is a meaningful convenience—especially if you want less hands-on mop maintenance—while improved navigation and Dirt Detect make the robot more reliable day to day. However, the Combo 10 Max+’s mopping falls short of the best hybrid competitors (Roborock, Ecovacs) and doesn’t clearly outclass earlier Roomba combos, so its premium price may not be worth it for everyone. If you value carpet protection and obstacle avoidance and want automated pad cleaning, it’s a strong, convenient choice; if mopping effectiveness is your priority, consider competing hybrids or the Roomba Combo j9+, which remains a solid alternative.
